NASHUA POLICE DEPARTMENT POLICE COMMISSIONERS

Since March 19, 1891, the Nashua Police Department has been under the authority of a three-person Police Commission appointed by the Governor of New Hampshire.

Job Description:

It shall be the duty of the police commissioners to appoint such police personnel, including police officers, staff, constables and superior officers as they deem necessary and to fix such persons’ compensation. The commissioners shall make and enforce all rules necessary for the operation of the police force in the manner most beneficial to the public interest.

The police commissioners shall have full power to make all rules for the government of the police force and to enforce said rules. The said commissioners shall have full and complete care and control of all lands and buildings thereon, used and erected for the use of the police department.  

Police commissioners are required to attend monthly meeting and any required special meetings. Police commissioners are compensated $100 annually, except for the clerk, which is $150 annually.

Application Process:

Applicants must be a resident of Nashua in good standing for at least five (5) years. For complete requirements and application process please see State of NH website. Restrictions include, but are not limited to the following: cannot hold an office of selectman, treasurer, collector of taxes, auditor, highway agent or head of a police department. (NH RSA 105)

Side Note– It is important to recognize that no appointments or applications are made at or through the NPD. The process is handled as stated through the governor and executive councilors.
